Roles
The Albion Joint Fire District offers a variety of roles to fit different skill sets and availability.
This position requires completion of the NYS BEFO/HMFRO/IFO Program (or equivalent). If you have these prerequisites when joining us, you will serve a probationary period but will be able to function as an interior firefighter. Prior to being authorized to respond to calls, you will go through an orientation process and must become familiar with equipment on the apparatus, and our response policies. You must also demonstrate competency to wear SCBA. If you do not have the prerequisites for Interior Firefighter, you will start out as support or exterior firefighter depending on your level of training and will have to complete the NYS BEFO/HMFRO/IFO Program to attain Interior Firefighter status.
This position requires training in the NYS BEFO/HMFRO Program (or equivalent). Exterior firefighters do not enter buildings for structural firefighting operations but can function in exterior roles such as placing ground ladders, operating exterior hose lines, and operating apparatus pumps. Exterior Firefighter is a journeyman position for those working towards Interior Firefighter status but is also a role that can be attained for those who just want to drive and operate apparatus, and/or function in a little more of hands-on role at incidents. Prior to being authorized to respond to calls, you will go through an orientation process and must become familiar with equipment on the apparatus, and our response policies. New members that already have the minimum training requirements for Exterior Firefighter, also must go through an orientation to be cleared for call response.
This position requires possession of a valid, Recognized CPR card and either NYS Certified First Responder (CFR) or NYS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification. Active EMS can be a journeyman position for those working towards Interior or Exterior Firefighter status but is also a role that can be attained for those who want to provide EMS to the public and their fellow firefighters. EMS members will undergo a probationary period that will remain open until cleared by the EMS Officer. Failure to maintain medical certification will result in being placed in Scene Support Status.
Support Members shall consist of persons who are at least eighteen (18) years of age, who desire to aid the department in non-firefighting duties, activities or functions, I.E. fundraising, clerical functions or Ladies Auxiliary. Support Staff shall not participate in Firematic Activities and be excused from all training requirements. At any time, a Support Staff Member can transfer classes.
